Yannis Ioannidis is a Professor at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Athens. He was also the President and General Director of Athena Research Center for 10 years. He holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, an MSc in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of California-Berkeley. His research interests include database and information systems, data infrastructures & digital repositories, scalable data processing, data science, data and text analytics, recommender systems and personalisation, and digital storytelling, topics on which he has published over 160 articles in leading journals and conferences. His work is often inspired by and applied to data management problems arising in industrial settings or other scientific fields in life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, humanities, and the arts. He has been a coordinator of all the OpenAIRE projects and a partner in many other research and innovation projects, including the currently active EOSC-Future (coordinator) and the Human Brain Project (software infrastructure director). Yannis is an ACM and IEEE Fellow, a member of Academia Europaea, and a recipient of several research and teaching awards. He is the Greek delegate to the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), a member of the ESFRI Executive Board, and the ESFRI representative to the e-Infrastructures Reflection Group (e-IRG).
